So Canadian with Ophira Eisenberg

Ask Me: PerformOphira Eisenberg is a stand up comedian, writer, and a host of The Moth. She has appeared on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, Fresh Faces of Comedy, and VH-1’s Best Week Ever. She also had her own 1⁄2 hour comedy special for CTV’s Comedy Now. That’s right. CANADIAN TELEVISION.

Ask Me: Thanks so much for being on the show! Everyone, very seriously, was like, “Whoa. She’s so funny”. And we were like, “Duh. She’s Canadian.” Really, how Canadian are you? Do you love the movie Highway 61?

Ophira: I am so Canadian. I still apologize to homeless people for not having money for them and if I had to choose between poutine and sex, the obvious answer is poutine.

I loved Highway 61 when I saw it – now 20 years ago? That is just silly. I mostly remember the character of Satan which is amazing – so funny. Two important things to note: One is when Satan is reviewing the photos of peoples’ he’s purchased for almost nothing he says. “One mickey of bourbon $6.65, one used TV $58.00, owning a soul for eternity? Priceless.” This is way before those MasterCard immortalized it.

Satan also loves bingo. When winning at the local church, one woman accuses him of cheating. He responds, “Lady, you can’t cheat at bingo. If you could, I would, but you can’t. I won because I was lucky – lucky to wind up in a town full of losers!” Great line. Satan is the anthesis of a Canadian.

Ask Me: Yes. That’s pretty Canadian. We looked up “poutine” and had a heart attack. How about Bob and Doug McKenzie? They were our favorites. What/who are your Canadian inspirations?

Ophira: Bob and Doug changed everything for me at a young age, as did this sketch duo I used to watch on television as a kid called Wayne and Shuster.

Their stuff would be considered wildly old fashioned now but as kid I loved them and later I was briefly in a sketch group called Lame and Shuster, but I don’t want to talk about that.

Ask Me: What don’t you miss about Canada? (the obvious answer being Canadian bacon)

Ophira: Mostly I miss going out all night and knowing no matter what happens, you can go to the doctor for free.
